Disney Parks Snacks – Churros

April 14, 2022

There’s nothing like a quick snack break to stay fueled and keep energy levels high while spending a day at the Disney theme parks.  A snack that is near and dear to our hearts, readily available at all of the parks, and just quintessential Disney is none other than the CHURRO!  Freshly fried and served warm, churros have a sweet cinnamon sugar crunch on the outside perfectly balanced by their soft and tender texture on the inside.  They are delicious as is or paired with a little something sweet to dip them in.

We were recently reminiscing about our favorite Disney parks snacks and, not so surprisingly, we found ourselves craving just about everything we talked about during our little trip down memory lane.  My kids asked me if I could try to make some of those snacks and, of course, my answer was a resounding yes.  First up on the list – churros!

To make our churros I used the Disney Parks Blog recipe for Churro Bites, and made a few modifications along the way.  To begin, I measured the specified amounts of water, butter, salt, and cinnamon in a medium-sized saucepan, and brought this all to a boil on medium heat.  Once the butter mixture boiled, I took the pan off the stove, added flour, and stirred until a soft dough formed.

After allowing the dough some time to cool, I transferred it to the bowl of my stand mixer and then added the eggs one at a time.

Now the churro dough was ready!  I filled a disposable decorating bag fitted with a large open star cake tip; and here is the point where the official Disney recipe and I parted ways for a bit.  I knew my kids wanted the traditional long churro they are accustomed to getting at the parks, instead of the smaller 1-inch bites that the recipe calls for.  And I did not trust myself to pipe the dough with a steady hand over hot oil, so I decided to prep the churros on a baking sheet first before frying them. Working my way down a baking sheet lined with wax paper, I piped the dough into 8-inch lengths.

I put the tray of uncooked churros into the freezer, and after a few hours they were solid enough for me to handle. It was now time to get ready to fry these babies! I filled a large, heavy pot with vegetable oil about 2-inches deep and turned the stove onto medium-high heat. Once the oil was hot enough I peeled the wax paper off of four churros and carefully slid them into the pot. After turning them every couple of minutes to ensure that they turned golden brown on all sides, I removed them from the oil and set them aside to drain on a plate lined with paper towels.

I continued to fry the churros in batches, four at a time, and once they were all done it was time to move on to the best part – coating each one in a cinnamon sugar mixture.

Hold on a second, I lied – the actual best part was finally getting the chance to dig in and taste the final product. And, boy, was the wait worth it! The churros were SO GOOD and as close to the real thing as I could have possibly imagined. We all agreed they were perfect all by themselves; but, for the sake of research (of course!), we also tested them out dipped in chocolate syrup, caramel sundae syrup, and Nutella. For me, personally, churros + Nutella = PERFECTION!!!

The next time you need a Disney churro fix, look no further than the recipe below; and before you know it, all will be right with the world!
